Pat on the Back > Fancy Snack Bar: Retain Your Best Employees

Do This:

  1. Do give your employees genuine recognition and appreciation for their hard work. A simple pat on the back and a "well done!" can go a long way. For example, you can acknowledge an employee who stayed late to finish a project by saying, "Thanks for staying late to finish that project. You saved the day!"

  2. Do create opportunities for your employees to learn and grow within your company. This can include providing mentorship, offering training programs, or assigning them to challenging projects. For instance, you can tell an employee interested in leadership, "I see you have potential as a team leader. Let's set up a training program to develop those skills."

  3. Do foster a positive work environment by encouraging teamwork and camaraderie. You can organize team-building activities, like a game of laser tag or an escape room challenge, to help employees bond and build relationships.

Don't Do This:

  1. Don't rely solely on fancy snack bars and other perks to retain your best employees. While it's nice to have free snacks and drinks, they won't compensate for the lack of recognition or opportunities for growth. Instead, focus on creating a supportive work culture.

  2. Don't play favorites or show bias towards certain employees. This can lead to resentment and a toxic work environment. Treat all employees equally and give everyone a chance to shine.

  3. Don't micromanage your employees. Give them autonomy to complete their tasks and trust them to do a good job. Micromanaging can make employees feel suffocated and undervalued. Let them know you trust them by saying, "I know you've got this under control. Let me know if you need any support."
